Greenwich+Docklands International Festival has invited some of the world’s greatest artists to delight and surprise crowds, on the waterways, highstreets and in the secret locations of London. Above and Beyond is limited-edition, large-format book celebrating that radical, unpredictable journey from 1996 to now.

From disused industrial corners of East London, the enduring architecture of St Paul’s Cathedral, the brutalist Moorings Estate in Thamesmead or the river Thames itself, GDIF has transformed the city into a marvellous stage for daring works of theatre, circus and dance for three decades, often reflecting the unpredictable, ever-changing journey of the city where it happens.

Alongside hundreds of stunning images by influential arts photographers, Above and Beyond invites you backstage at the festival with insights and reflections from the producers, artists and participants that have made GDIF a beloved, landmark cultural event for a generation.

After a lifetime of editing, Fiona Hughes is a freelance writer and occasional producer. She has always remained true to her love of culture, from early days at the Cannes Film Festival for Screen International to joining the Arts team at the Daily Telegraph, becoming long-serving Arts Editor of the Evening Standard or writing about books and radio for Radio Times, as she does today. The pleasure of her 20-year role as producer of the Evening Standard Theatre Awards has been all the theatre she has seen and what she learnt from Anna Wintour about the power of the red carpet. A resident of Greenwich for many years, she discovered the joy of outdoor theatre from Greenwich+Docklands International Festival and became a trustee in 2017, before being appointed Chair in 2025.

“‘One of the things I am struck by when flicking through Above and Beyond is not just the beautiful pictures of exquisite pieces of theatre, but the looks of awe, thrill and enjoyment on the faces of those watching.”
